Wishes to prevent the banana puree from becoming black

Packing for freshness

Because ethylene gas is released through the fruit stem, bananas are blackened, which causes the fruit to reach the fruit faster due to the exposure of ethylene gas to the skin of the fruit. This harmful gas may even cause fruits that are near the bananas. Are also expected to arrive sooner. To slow this process down and keep the banana yellow for a longer time, separate the bananas and wrap them tightly with a kitchen towel. This trick keeps the bananas from blackening for up to a week depending on the temperature of the kitchen.

Put bananas next to other fruits

You can use ethylene gas to your advantage by placing more fruits in the fruit container; fruits that are sturdy and  ripen  late, such as avocado, salmon, plum, peach and pear, along with bananas in the fruit container. You’ll see bananas turn black later, while other fruits ripen faster. Avoid bananas with vegetables and fruits such as cucumbers, carrots, eggplant, peas, peppers, squash, sweet potatoes and watermelons that arrive early.

Put in the fridge

When the bananas have reached the level you like, place them in the freezer and place in the freezer. Although the skin is still black, it does not reach the fruit and can remain frozen for two to three months. In colder or cooler areas than in the fridge, bananas remain for up to 5 days and you can also store half-eaten bananas in the same way. Do not place the bananas in the refrigerator until the bananas have arrived, as they are blackened sooner than they are at room temperature.

Soak bananas in juice

Use some juice to prevent bananas from becoming black. There are many fruits you can use, such as lemongrass, orange, canned pineapple, grapefruit and even lemongrass, which are acidic fruits and therefore do not allow the color of banana to turn black. To do this, you just need to dip the bananas in some of the water and not worry about their blackness.

World’s most famous banana puree producers and exporters

World's most famous banana puree producers and exporters Banana exports to other countries of the world

The production technologies used for export and self-consumption are so different that analysts prefer to separate them into two separate economic activities. On the one hand, small-scale production for home consumption or for sale in local markets makes limited use of external inputs and is labor intensive. Production costs are low and comparable to other major elements such as sweet potatoes, rice, corn and yams. On the other hand, production for export markets uses foreign inputs extensively and is technically complex. Even in the production of bananas for export technologies can be very different; for example, the yield on large commercial farms can be 6 times higher than the amount produced on a small scale. This chapter describes bananas production systems for export to major banana exporting countries since the mid-1980s and illustrates the medium-term outlook for their production.

Ecuador

Ecuador is the largest banana exporter in the world and its share of the banana trade in the world is increasing. Exports increased from one million tonnes in 1985 to 3.6 million tonnes in 2000. That’s equivalent to an average annual rate of about 9 percent, the highest of the top five exporting countries. This growth was largely sustained by increasing groundwater levels and to a lesser extent by increasing land productivity (Figure 16). About 18 percent of bananas traded worldwide were in Ecuador in the 1970s and 1980s, and this share increased to 30 percent in the 1990s. The production and trade of bananas in Ecuador generates about 380,000 direct jobs.

Costa Rica

With about two million tonnes of bananas exported in 2000, Costa Rica is the second largest exporter after Ecuador. Bananas are the only major agricultural exports made with pineapples and coffee from afar. Bananas are produced on relatively large farms by independent growers and multinationals, which control about 50% of the planted area. The area planted with bananas and banana production has grown dramatically over the period 1985-1995. Production with growth of 8 percent per year and planted area slightly above 11 percent. This growth was due to a large-scale rehabilitation program implemented in the early 1990s, when both banana-planted and banana-area areas doubled in the 1993-1999 period. Corresponds with production, and productivity is reduced. Subsequently, production and production improved to near-surface levels from 1993 to 1998 in the late 1980s. However, since the late 1990s, the price of bananas has fallen and the contamination of black sigatoka has led to disappointment from high inputs or expansion in the area, resulting in stagnation in production and productivity. Costa Rica remains today as Latin America’s highest-performing country, despite a decade of declining or stagnant productivity.

 Colombia

Banana in Colombia is the third most important agricultural export after coffee and flowers. More than 90 percent is estimated to be 1.9 million tonnes of Cavendish bananas produced in 2000. Banana crops in Colombia occupy about 60,000 hectares, or 7 percent of the total area planted for fruit crops. About 16 percent of the area planted with bananas is “Crawl bananas” grown for the domestic market and the rest is bananas for export. Production is concentrated in Antioquia and Madgalena, which are areas of conflict. Antioquia accounts for approximately 70% of the area planted with bananas and most of the plants for export. Gross Michel’s dessert bananas are still successfully growing in Colombia in the highlands and sold domestically.

Other Latin American countries

Bananas in Guatemala, Honduras and Panama play a significant role in their economies and are an important source of employment and export income. However, total production in these countries over the past 15 years (2000 to 1985) was relatively stagnant due to the adverse impacts of climate-related events, industrial disputes, crop diseases, rising production costs and declining banana prices. After 2000, especially in Guatemala and Honduras, which was hit by Hurricane Mitch in late 1998, severe production and export recovery is observed. Exports also expanded significantly in 2002 and the outlook for 2003 is high.

Philippines

Bananas are an important foodstuff for the Philippines, a source of income for local farmers and a foreign currency for the country. They are the foremost Philippine fruit crop in terms of area, volume and production value. About 400,000 hectares of bananas were harvested in 2000, compared to 100,000 hectares of mango, the second most important fruit export.

Africa

Bananas are native to many parts of central, western and eastern Africa. Unlike Latin American countries where Cavendish is predominant, African farms grow a variety of local and exotic varieties. Most farms are small-scale, use little foreign input, and produce less productivity than bananas producers, while transnational corporations use large farms and advanced technology to export. Have a bold presence.
